Cap cleaning guide showing how to clean a cap without ruining its shape

How to Clean a Cap Without Ruining Its Shape

Caps collect sweat, skin oils, dust and sunscreen quickly, especially in warm weather. The mistake is assuming every cap should be cleaned the same way. Different fabrics, dyes, embroidery and brim constructions react differently to water, detergent and heat.

When in doubt, use the least aggressive method first.

Before you start

Check the care label if your cap has one. If the manufacturer gives specific cleaning instructions, follow those ahead of a generic method.

Inspect the cap for loose threads, damaged embroidery, colour transfer or a brim that already feels weak. Test your cleaner on a small hidden area before using it across a visible panel.

What you need

  • Cool or lukewarm water
  • A small amount of mild detergent or gentle soap
  • A soft clean cloth or very soft brush
  • A clean towel
  • A rounded object or clean bowl to help support the crown while drying, if needed

Step 1: remove loose dirt

Use a dry soft cloth or brush to remove dust and loose debris. This prevents you from grinding dirt deeper into damp fabric later.

Step 2: spot-test

Mix a small amount of mild cleaner with water. Dab it onto an inconspicuous area and check for colour bleeding or unwanted marks before continuing.

Step 3: clean the dirtiest areas gently

Focus first on the inner sweatband, then any visible marks on the crown or brim. Work with light pressure. Repeated aggressive scrubbing can roughen fabric, distort embroidery and create a cleaner patch that looks different from the surrounding material.

Step 4: remove cleaner residue

Use a separate damp cloth with clean water to lift away remaining soap. Avoid soaking the cap unnecessarily unless its care instructions specifically allow immersion.

Step 5: reshape before drying

Gently return the crown and brim to their intended shape while the cap is still damp. Do not twist or wring it.

Step 6: air-dry

Let the cap dry naturally in a ventilated area away from intense direct heat. High heat can affect shape, fabric, adhesives and some synthetic components. Supporting the crown while it dries can help it keep its form.

Should you put a cap in the washing machine?

Only if the cap's care instructions say it is suitable. A machine cycle introduces agitation, pressure and spinning that may damage shape or embroidery. Hand spot-cleaning is the safer default when you do not know the construction.

Should you put a cap in a dishwasher?

We do not recommend using a dishwasher as a general cap-care method. Dishwashers are designed for dishes, not textiles, and detergents, water temperature and drying conditions can be harsh.

How often should you clean a cap?

Clean based on wear, not a fixed calendar. A cap worn outdoors every day in summer may need attention far sooner than one worn occasionally indoors. Light, regular cleaning is usually easier than waiting for heavy buildup.
